Mr. Ed Ducky's Transformation

Updated: Jan 29, 2022

Our three rescue planks near and dear to us are; Rescue, Rehab, and Reform. With every rescue, we hope just one person will learn something new to help them care for their animals, or better yet, to pass that lesson on to others to spread the good. Ducky is a special dog to us and exemplifies our three planks and soon you’ll realize why we call him Mr. Ed Ducky!

Ducky was just a puppy at a shelter waiting for his forever family;

His story began as a puppy in a shelter. Many puppies that come through the shelter system are at high risk of becoming ill. Oftentimes, they are born from dogs who weren’t properly vaccinated but coupled with being thrown into a shelter environment, that already low immunity is at an even higher risk for illness. All dogs are to receive intake vaccinations to help protect them, but those vaccines aren’t immediate, and they always need a booster down the road. Ducky did get his initial vaccines and was quickly adopted!

Back at the shelter for the second time.

About a year and a half later, Ducky was found as a stray… abandoned and left to fend for himself. He looked a lot different as he found himself back at the same shelter he was adopted from. Sure, he was bigger, but he had a staggering walk, had facial deformities, and his teeth were completely rotten. All symptoms of suffering a horrible disease called distemper.

His Rescue

We immediately went to get Ducky… Rescued! The next step in Ducky’s transformation was his Rehab. Distemper affects a dog’s respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems with life-changing, and life-longing effects. Obviously, there was a long gap and we don’t know what sweet Ducky experienced, but the effects of his fight with distemper were evident.

His medical treatment

Ducky eventually had to have ALL of his teeth removed and will occasionally have a head twitch that will remain along with the changes in his skull. But… he is a beautiful, and tremendously well-behaved dog. He had an incredible family that took him in to foster, and he eventually found the perfect family to adopt him!

Ducky, the new dog ambassador!

As mentioned, Ducky is the perfect dog! He had an incredible foster family who connected with him in a special way and helped his Rehab. But they also led an effort to help Reform and educate the public about Ducky connecting with the Children’s Craniofacial Association. Ducky became an Ambassador dog helping spread the word about this wonderful organization representing the children who may have some physical differences, but are equally special and also perfect! Mr. Ed Ducky reporting for duty!

What is Reform?

Reforming the public begins with connecting to folks and educating them on what is going on right in their very own community. Whether it’s providing tips and resources on how to care for pets, or by providing community support through our Serenity Project, knowledge sharing is key to helping people become animal aware and reversing the treatment we continue to see within animal welfare.
