FOSTER PROCESS AT DALLAS DOG
A temporary home can make a lifetime of difference
Where Compassion Meets Second Chances, Provide Hope, Comfort, and a Fresh Start.
Dallas DogRRR’s Foster Program is essential to our mission of saving homeless pets by placing them in temporary, loving homes where they can truly thrive. By fostering, you offer pets a warm, caring environment to heal, grow, and prepare for adoption. Foster parents provide food, water, toys, and, most importantly, love and support. Pets need foster homes for various reasons:
-
Young age:
-
Some pets, especially puppies, aren’t ready for adoption until their immune systems mature, typically around 10 weeks old. Foster homes provide a safe space during these early weeks.
-
-
Medical recovery:
-
Many pets come to us in need of special care, from routine procedures like spay or neuter surgeries to more complex treatments for conditions like orthopedic issues or parvo. Foster homes are ideal for helping these pets recover in a comforting setting.
-
-
Behavioral and socialization needs:
-
Some pets may need time in a home environment to become comfortable with people and other animals, allowing them to adjust and grow into a great fit for an adoptive family. Foster parents provide essential enrichment, training, and the behavioral guidance these animals need to flourish.
-
By fostering, you become a crucial part of a pet’s journey from rescue to forever home. Join us in offering them a second chance to find love and stability.

Our foster Process
Thank you for your interest in becoming a foster with Dallas DogRRR! By stepping up as a foster, you’re providing a vital bridge to a new life for pets in need. We’re excited to welcome you into the Dallas DogRRR family and provide all the support, supplies, and resources you’ll need for a rewarding foster experience. Follow the steps below to begin your journey with us!
• Visit our website at dallasdogrrr.org and fill out the Foster Application form. This helps us understand your experience, home setup, and the type of dog you’re interested in fostering.
• It takes 24-48 hours to process your application. If you haven’t heard from anyone within 72 hours, please check your spam folder or email us at foster@dallasdogrrr.org.
Once we receive your application, our Foster Team will review it, perform a vet check to ensure your current pets are up to date on vaccinations, and reach out to discuss any details or questions.
We may schedule a brief home visit or virtual tour to ensure your home is safe and suitable for a foster dog. This is a standard step to ensure the comfort and safety of both you and the dog.
Based on your preferences, we will match you with a dog in need. We consider your household, other pets, and availability to find the perfect foster companion.
• Once you’ve been matched with your foster, you’ll arrange to either pick up the dog or coordinate transport.
• We’ll provide all the essential items you need, including:
• For Puppies: Crate, collar with tags, puppy pen, food, toys, puppy pads, blankets, bed, and treats (if available).
• For Adult Dogs: Crate, collar with tags, leash, food, toys, bed, and blankets.
• If you need additional supplies, please contact our Supply Depot to ensure you have everything necessary. Dogs are required to wear a collar and ID tag at all times.
• We offer extensive support for our fosters! You’ll receive a cheat sheet with all the key contact information to help you manage your foster dog’s care.
• Medical Appointments: You are responsible for scheduling any necessary vet appointments. Dallas DogRRR covers all medical costs, but you must reach out to our medical team if you notice any changes in your foster dog or if vaccinations and heartworm/flea prevention are due. Please follow the guidance on your cheat sheet to ensure your dog stays up to date on shots and treatments.
A big part of fostering is helping your foster dog find their forever home. It’s your responsibility to regularly take photos and videos, post them in the foster group, and share them with the foster coordinator. We highly encourage you to take advantage of our quarterly photo shoots or schedule a session with our private photographer. A great photo can make all the difference in helping your foster stand out and find a family!
• We require fosters to attend at least one event per month, but the more you attend, the better! The more people see your foster, the faster the adoption process goes, and it helps keep your dog top of mind with our adoption team.
• We encourage you to check our website for upcoming events where you can showcase your foster dog. Attending events increases the chances of finding your foster a home because our adoption team will be reminded of your dog and can work to match them with potential adopters.
• If you’re unable to attend an event, please let us know in advance, and we can coordinate transportation for your foster dog with one of our volunteers.
• Medical Appointments: You are responsible for scheduling all necessary medical appointments for your foster dog. Dallas DogRRR covers the costs, but it’s your duty to ensure your foster stays up to date on vaccinations, heartworm prevention, flea prevention, and any other health-related needs.
• You’ll receive a cheat sheet with all the relevant contact details for making appointments and asking questions.
• If you notice any health changes, promptly reach out to our medical team via the provided email.
• Monthly heartworm and flea prevention must be requested, and puppies must remain up to date on their shot schedules. Please make sure you stay in close contact with the medical team to manage these requirements.
• When a potential adopter expresses interest in your foster dog, we will handle the adoption application process, but you’ll play an important role in ensuring the best fit. You’ll have the opportunity to speak with the prospective adopters, answer questions, and help decide if it’s a good match.
• Our team will guide you through the transition and finalize the adoption once the right home is found for your foster.
• Even after adoption, we keep in touch with the new families to ensure a smooth transition. Your input as a foster parent can be invaluable during this period, so we may ask for feedback to help guide the adopters as the dog settles into their new home.
DISCLAIMERS
At Dallas DogRRR, all of our animals go through a thorough medical and behavioral evaluation process. While it’s not necessarily rigorous, each dog is carefully monitored and supported through our foster system, where they receive medical care and are observed in a home environment. Our fosters are trained to help support the behavioral needs of the animals, regularly updating us on their progress and any concerns. This allows us to disclose all known behaviors to potential adopters. However, as with any animal, new behaviors may emerge as they become more comfortable in their new home. For our boarding dogs, many have experienced a home environment at some point and receive regular socialization and training, including the Canine Good Citizen program and work with volunteers. Some dogs also undergo more intensive training based on their individual needs. We provide full transparency to adopters about each pet’s medical and behavioral history, but please understand that every dog’s behavior can evolve as they adjust to a new environment. However, we do not guarantee breed or age, as these details are based on the information available at the time of rescue.
