Harold's Victory! Petland Dallas is Officially Closed!

Updated: Sep 28, 2023

The Humane Pet Store Ordinance passed in May! The sale of pets in pet stores in the City of Dallas became unlawful thanks to Dallas City Council for passing the Humane Pet Store Ordinance!

We just received amazing news. Petland Dallas has closed its doors forever. As we have stated time and time again we are not here to rescue animals. We are reforming animal legislation!!!

This is for Harold and Patti. Our animal advocate peers understand the magnitude of this moment. Always remember to "just give hope a chance to float up." We are beginning to change the mindset of animals in Texas are not property. They deserve to be treated humanely!!!

HAROLD IS A PETLAND ADOPTER SURVIVOR

Out of thirty-three pet stores in Dallas, only one was selling puppies, Petland. Notorious for selling unhealthy puppies acquired from puppy mills, shutting down Petland in Dallas is a huge step in progress for North Texas. Humane care and respect for our pets is finally becoming a priority.

A HUGE THANK you to DogRRR Nation and all who supported this ordinance!! Harold is so thankful for this support!

“If Harold’s here, how many more dogs are out there like him? How many didn’t make it? How many got returned? There NEEDS to be a change.”

- Patti Dawson, President of Dallas Dog - Rescue Rehab Reform

Harold’s Story

Listen and read more to Harold’s heartbreaking yet inspiring story.

This is Harold. He is a purebred Frenchie. Originally purchased from a Dallas Petland (that thrives on the exploitation of dogs in puppy mills) for $7,000. Shortly after he was bought, the owner realized he had some serious medical conditions when he stopped walking! She reached out to the pet store and they said she must have dropped him and that he was fine. She was told by her doctor he needed immediate surgery. She was not able to afford that after the large payment of buying him just weeks prior. She reached out to our rescue to surrender, Dallas Dog took him in. He will forever live as a foster in the rescue and receive all the medical care he needs. He will not live a full life however he will live the best life. Harold has been diagnosed with Kyphosis, megaesophagus, hydrocephalus and an enlarged palate.

He requires quite the daily medical ritual. Hand feedings 3 times a day in an upright position. We call this time "meatball time" because we make his food into tiny flat meatballs, making it easier to eat. He requires daily medicals from pills and injectable medication. Harold is completely paralyzed from the bottom of the neck down so he is incontinent and needs medication and help expressing his bladder. He is not able or won’t drink water on his own so he receives daily sub-q injections. Harold is almost two years old. You may wonder how could this happen? Harold is an example of the horrors of puppy mill operations where irresponsible breeding produces dogs with major issues all for profit.

Fortunately, Dallas Dog saved this little fellow from euthanasia. He now lives a comfortable life being spoiled and having all of his needs met. Harold is a spokesman for irresponsible breeding and ending the sale of puppies from irresponsible puppy mill breeding.

Harold adores his foster mom he is extremely attached to her! He is also lucky because his foster mom is the President of the rescue. He is quite the little dude that packs a serious attitude. He loves exploring, getting carted in his stroller, and befriending new fosters. He is quite the fighter too. He has already had a 10 day stay at the ER with pneumonia. The vet said he would not likely survive another bad case. We have to be very careful and watch when he is eating due to his regerg, he could stop breathing and has to be rushed to the ER! He usually bounces back quickly and is back to handling his complaint department for the rescue.

Harold’s story isn’t the first or last. His story is WHY we continue to do what we do and work to change the animal welfare laws across Texas and are working extensively towards passing Humane Pet Store Ordinances across the entire state.

Harold reminds us to #adoptdontshop Harold reminds us not to support backyard breeders and he reminds us that #fosteringsaveslives You may think that rescues don't ever get purebred dogs....you would be wrong. We see as many purebreds as we do mixed breeds that end up at shelters and eventually into our care.
