What is Parvo and Why is it So Horrible?

Parvovirus is a highly contagious viral infection that primarily affects dogs, especially puppies. It attacks rapidly dividing cells in the body, particularly those in the intestines and bone marrow. This leads to severe gastrointestinal symptoms, such as vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration, which can quickly become life-threatening.

What makes parvo so devastating is its ability to spread rapidly and its resistance to treatment. It can survive in the environment for months, making it easy for susceptible dogs to contract the virus. Without prompt and intensive medical care, parvo can have a mortality rate of up to 90%, especially in young and unvaccinated puppies.

Symptoms of Parvo:

• Severe diarrhea, often bloody

• Vomiting

• Loss of appetite

• Lethargy

• Dehydration

• Fever

How is Parvo Preventable?

The most effective way to prevent parvo is through vaccination. Puppies should receive a series of vaccinations starting at around 6-8 weeks of age, with booster shots given every 3-4 weeks until they are about 16 weeks old. Adult dogs should receive regular booster shots to maintain immunity.
