DALLAS DOG INTAKE PROCESS

Support to Avoid Surrendering Your Dog

There are programs that provide resources and services to Texas residents who are experiencing challenges to keeping their pet(s) with an overall goal of keeping pets out of the sheltering system and providing a safe, judgment-free zone for anyone in need. Our team can provide emergency pet food, pet resource assistance, and referrals to outside social service and animal welfare agencies.

How Does Dallas DogRRR Handle Intake?

This is a common question that does not have an easy answer - managing intake in a rescue the size of Dallas DogRRR is like playing chess with 200 pieces. This is what we consider when determining if we intake a dog or cat:
  • Intake numbers vs. outcome numbers, which includes adoption, transport, & death

  • Emergency medical pulls

  • Triaging requests

  • Medical needs of the animal & how many appointments we have available to us

  • Do we have fosters and the funds to cover?

  • Do we have the manpower to handle what happens behind the scenes, such as supplies, adoptions, networking, etc.?

  • Do we have a balanced selection of breeds, ages, sizes?

  • Length of stay for adult dogs in the rescue

  • How many dogs are currently needing placement?

  • Dogs we have already committed to taking, but not currently in our care

  • Animals being returned

  • The behavior of the animal - how they are with dogs, cats, kids, etc.?

  • How many fosters/adopters are asking for help with dogs that they have found or are networking?

This is just a small selection of the factors that need to be considered before we intake an animal. On the dark side, being the person/persons who have to make these life or death decisions is so heartbreaking and soul-destroying.

Out of State Options

Finally, texas has a huge pet overpopulation problem. Many northern states do not. if you have any friends or family traveling to northern states any time soon, particularly the pacific northwest (oregon, washington) or new england, you might try contacting rescues in those areas to see if they have any space. They sometimes do. other northern states are worth checking into, as well.
