Fortunate Fortuna

Fortuna was found in South Texas - she was in very bad shape. It was obvious that she’d been overbred, abused, and was scared and in a lot of pain. Her leg had been broken and hadn’t healed properly.

Dallas Dog brought Fortuna into the rescue where she spent some time decompressing with our rescue boarding partner. She was terrified of other dogs and lashed out in pure fear. Who could blame her? She’d been through hell. One of our volunteers offered to transport her to the vet for surgery from boarding and stepped up to the plate when she found out that Fortuna needed to recover somewhere other than the boarding facility. It was temporary, she said.

It wasn’t easy, and her foster’s dedication speaks to how difficult fostering can sometimes be. She was rotating her dogs because Fortuna couldn’t be around them yet and Fortuna needed a lot of care after her surgery. It was hard work.

LIVING THE GOOD LIFE

Her foster said “She’d been so good in her room. No accidents... no destruction... no barking. Just lays in her bed and wags her tail. I would sit in there with her and pet her as she slept. I would take her peanut butter boneys and watch as she frantically licked them clean. I finally say she can just stay... at this point she has come so far and feels so safe here... I would be a jerk to send her back. So we start training. In-home sessions, at the park, tried an event (she wasn’t quite ready and that’s okay). But now......I LOVE her. She has won me over. This dog who HATED every dog who even breathed her direction. This dog who I was a little scared to bring into my home before I knew or understood her. This dog who was covered in scars and filled with fear...now who wags her tail at my dogs with just a tiny baby gate between them... who has played freely with my puppy foster Picasso and shown she can love another dog with the right intro and time...this dog who licks my small kids in the face and naps in my lap as I hold her like a newborn baby. Who is crate trained, and loves her bed, who never has accidents, and sits for a treat, and loves to love people with every fiber of her being. This dog who just needed time and love to show you her true self.”

Fortuna’s foster became her adopter and her sad story now has the happy ending all dogs deserve!
