Dallas Dog. Helping animals overcome their yesterdays and rewrite their tomorrows. Meet Caleb, he was once called, "The Tick Covered Dog" when people first saw his pictures at the shelter.
Caleb's journey was long but with the right medical care and the TLC from his foster, he was on his way to a major transformation.
Sometimes when we rescue an animal, the pain and injury are a result of a single event, like being hit by a car or being attacked by another animal. In Caleb’s case, his condition was a result of neglect over weeks or more than likely. months with no help or sympathy from his owners.
And then fate stepped in and a neighbor saw him. And that neighbor called animal control for help and gave Caleb a voice. That voice allowed animal control to investigate and subsequently remove Caleb from the home. That voice undoubtedly saved his life.
Weak, skinny, and with a significant loss of hair, the call for help from the shelter went out and Dallas Dog came to his rescue. Pictures speak a thousand words, and Caleb’s pictures spoke them loudly.
Caleb was covered in thousands of ticks. The vet staff worked for hours removing the ticks from his sore little body.
Literally, thousands of fleas and ticks consumed his body and were living off of him. His bloodwork was alarmingly poor and signaled additional internal parasites living on him from the inside. It was now or never, and we always choose now.
Caleb spent more than a week at our vet receiving medicatied baths, and of course, plenty of food and water that he had been deprived of previously. His ears, once weighted down with ticks, were beginning to straighten up, and his eyes began to show the light of life! He was on his way back and ready for the next step… a foster home.
Caleb’s story hit a personal note with one of our followers, and during the time Caleb was hospitalized, this person reached out to us about fostering and helping Caleb. Why was this so personal? This person had contracted Lyme disease from being bit by a tick and seeing the pain and condition Caleb was in, the connection to Caleb was immediate. Caleb had his foster home!
Caleb recovered in his foster home and received so much love and affection. He was finally getting the life he deserved.
Foster homes are essential to the rehabilitation of our animals. Whether our animal is a medical case, a neglect case, or an abandonment case, the core of any foster home is love, support, and more love! Over time, the real Caleb blossomed! His physical condition improved so much he looked like a brand-new dog! And his personality… well he seemed to be smiling all the time now!
Fairytale Ending
And what makes this Transformation story even more special is that the connection between Caleb’s foster and Caleb was undeniable fate. Caleb’s foster knew he wasn’t leaving their house and made it official soon after opening their home to foster him!
